It is called bihu folk dance Assam, Putting palms on waist, the dancers made brisk footsteps and swayed their body while circling the place; young men played the cymbal, drum and the pipe and all the spectators are tapping their feet in the rhythm of music, this was my experience when I watched the Bihu dance few months ago. It was some cultural festival in surajkund Haryana, where I got chance to see the Assamese folk dance, Rongali Bihu for the first time. The people of Assam celebrates three types of Bihu festival – Rongaali Bihu in the mid April, Kati Bihu or Kongaali Bihu that is celebrated in mid October and Magh or Bhogali Bihu is the festival of January. All the three Bihu festival commemorates the three phases of cultivation – Bohaag bihu marks the advent of new year and start of cultivation, the Kati Bihu is the festival after completing the sowing of paddy and ultimately the Magh Bihu is the celebrated after the harvest period. To welcome the new year and in the anticipation of the good harvest, young men and women dance in colorful dresses in festivity. The brisk steps and the hand movements, the sound of melodious music, the energy of the dancers enthralls the audience and takes them to another world
