Madhya Pradesh is a home for natural environment, wildlife, high mountains, wavy rivers, long vast fields and forests. Some of the famous places in MP are Bhopal, Bandhavgarh wild life, Khajuraho temples, Gwalior fort, Shivpuri, Orchha, Sanchi stupas, Indore, Mandu, Ujjain, Jabalpur, Kanha wildlife, Pachmarhi.

Sanchi Stupa Raisen Madhya Pradesh

Driving to Sanchi 6 kilometers north east of Bhopal was a surreal experience. Located in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh Sanchi is one of those quiet towns which is more famous because of its past then what it is today. If you are in the lookout for a forgotten town which tells its own tales this is the place to be in. Though there are many Buddhist relics in and near Sanchi the most popular and frequented one is Sanchi Stupa. A walk in this Buddhist relic dating back to the 3rd century B.C was quite an eventful experience. Surprisingly I saw a few foreigners (Japanese and Koreans) discussing the finer points of the relic. The Stupa as it stands today is actually a renovated version of the original stupa that was constructed by Ashoka as a symbol of love, peace, wisdom and courage.

A stupa is a hemispherical dome having a central chamber which in most cases consists of the relics of Buddha. The Sanchi Stupa is one of the most well preserved monuments of its time. It has a chaatra like structure which symbolizes high rank amongst the other stupas. What got me more interested is not the stupa so much as its eventful history. It is said that the site was selected because Ashoka married a girl from Vidisha which was 10 kilometers from Sanchi. It became a sanctuary for Buddhist monks who were completely at home with its peaceful surroundings.

The guide told us that the Sunga and the Satavahana period left a lasting impression on the stupa. First it was vandalized in the Sunga period by Pusyamitra Sunga and only the remnants of the original stupa remained till his son Agnimitra rebuilt it again. The architectural differences from the original stupa were quite noteworthy. For instance three parasols were added, the dome was flattened at the top, second and third stupa was added as well. The stupa was further developed in the Satavahana period. A stone balustrade was added along with the inscription on the Southern gateway. It is during this period that narratives from the life of Buddha were inscribed in the Stupa. The Jataka tales describing stories of Buddha and his different incarnations in Bodhisattvas makes for an interesting observation. By far the most important Buddhist site, Sanchi Stupa ranks as an important World Heritage site too. The site museum which showcases the renowned image of Four Lions that once sat atop the Ashoka Pillar was an eye-opener for me. In all, my tryst with Sanchi Stupa was a great one for sure!

Chhatrasal ka Maqbara, Chattarpur

The centrally located state in the Indian map, Madhya Pradesh, comprises of a number of cities, well known for its historical attractions, among which, Chattarpur is worth a mention.  The city was a vasallstat in Bundelkhand, before India got its independence. The prime attractions of the city are the state protected historical monuments, which were built over the Centuries. Chhatrasal Maqbara is one of those historical monuments of Chattarpur that is actually the cenotaph of the Maharaja of Chhatrasal.

The monument, Chhatrasal Ka Maqbara was built in 18th Century in the memory of Kesari Maharaja Chhatrasal of Bundelkhand. Apart from being historically important as it is the cenotaph of the Maharaja, it is also an important monument from architectural point of view. This is an octagonal structure built up of bricks, stone and lime. When you enter through the beautifully decorated arched gate, you will find spherical shaped, pillared verandah both on the right and left of the complex. The interior walls have portrayal of rathikas. The upper portion of the structure is ornately decorated with colorful wall paintings with a lot of variations.

The tomb or the Samadhi of Maharaja Chhatrasal is situated right in the middle, with an ambulatory or as it is locally called pradakshina path, encircling it. The shikhara of this cenotaph is dome shaped and there are chhajja or shades all around. On your visit to Madhya Pradesh, you can visit this ancient architecture of historical importance, in order to get a flavor of the brilliant architectural craftsmanship of the ancient time.
