Tonga

A string of more than 170 islands scattered over the South Pacific, Tonga is reputed to be the last Polynesian monarchy. Once a British protectorate, this Christian country is ruled by a king supported by hereditary noblemen. The country joined the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Nations in 1970 and 1999 respectively.

In recent years the demand for representative democracy is gaining ground and general election held in March 2005 returned six pro-democracy candidates out of the nine people's representatives seats contested.

Travel overview
The only remaining monarchy in the Pacific, Tonga stands out for its lively Polynesian culture. The capital city of Nuku’alofa, meaning the 'Abode of Love’, is a charming city brimming with a number of attractions including the Basilica of St Anthony of Padua

Lapaha, on the eastern side of the main island of Tongatapu, has the ancient tombs or langi in the South Pacific. Tourists can escape to deserted beaches where they can opt for snorkelling in untouched coral gardens or simply watch the waves crashing onto the shore
