Cambodia
Most Cambodians have the proud boast that they are the Khmers, descendants
of the mighty Angkor Empire that ruled over much of Southeast Asia
and reached its pinnacle in the 10th and 13th centuries AD. The country
suffered invasions by the Thai and Cham (from present-day Vietnam)
resulting in the weakening of the empire. The country became a protectorate
of France in 1863. Subsequently, it became part of French Indochina
in 1887. It was occupied by Japan in World War II gaining full independence
from France in 1953. After 1975 the country came under the repressive
regime of Communist Khmer Rouge forces under Pol Pot. In 1978 Vietnam
came to the rescue of the people of Combodia and drove the Khmer Rouge
into the sidelines. A semblance of normalcy under a coalition government
was restored by the UN sponsored elections in 1993. Khmer Rouge elements
are extinct now in the country.
