Birds in the City

Are you an avid bird watcher? I am a bird watcher, if not an avid one. Because of the location of our house in the outskirts of city, we used to feel living in the lap of nature instead of the jungle of concrete. There was a big pond and rows of trees and small plants near our home that facilitated my habit of bird watching. It also helped me inculcate the first-hand knowledge of ecosystem.

In the morning, the brigade of small birds like magpie robin, chikadees, sparrows used to chirp on the trees and in our balcony. But the bird that fascinated me most was the colorful kingfisher. As I watched the picture of the black bird with fish in the beak, I remembered the catching of fish by the kingfishers in the pond in our area. Like a flash of lightning, the kingfisher used to dive into the pond and after a few seconds, it came out with the prey in it's beak! But Alas! situations have changed now as concrete houses have replaced the trees and plants in our area. Only the pond is still there, but the colorful flowers and birds are very much missing.

Destruction of nature is not only happening in my city, but all over India, specially by deforestation. It's a pity that we, Indians, instead of feeling blessed for nature's bounteous beauty, are destroying the flora and fauna of the country. India is said to be the home of various types of trees and plants, innumerable species of birds and wide varieties of animals. Though wild life sanctuaries and reserve forests are there for nature conservation, some of the birds and wild animals are only to be found in the pictures. It is high time we should try every possible means to save our ecosystem and dear nature.
