Jaisalmer Fort
Jaisalmer fort, Incredible India

A strong structure built in the sand dunes and it is the pride of Jaisalmer city, known as Jaisalmer fort (Sonar Qila), yellow stone used to built this Indian architecture.
It was not for nothing that Satyajit Ray centered his legendary Sonar Kella in Jaisalmer! Straight out of the Arabian Nights, the town, the lanes, its people and buildings and the air breathe of fantasy and fairy tale. Built of ochre sandstone, the entire town reflects golden streaks in every nook and corner, beaming with the luminescence of a mirage at sundown. A city with castled city walls, a glorious fortress and delicately carved stone and wooden havelis (homes), Jaisalmer has been clicked most aesthetically.

The human mind has always had an urge to delve into the past; to know about the events and occasions of yesteryears and tread on the avenues of a bygone era. This liking for the ancient times is more often than not centered on the architectural specimens of the then artisans. Jaisalmer Fort is one such example that demands loads of appreciation and more than just one visit.

The huge structure of Jaisalmer Fort appears to rise out of a dreamy desert haze of the Thar, its ochre sandstone walls and bastions blending with the golden hue in the afternoon sun give it a fairy tale look, which is why it is fittingly called Sonar Kila or the Golden Fort or Jaisalmer Fort. Built in 1156, the Jaisalmer Fort is located in the medieval fortress town of Jaisalmer. Its citadels envelop a whole township that consists of the palace complex and havelis of affluent merchants carved delicately. You will come across several temples and the houses of the armies and traders positioned strategically on the trade route, through where the caravans of the yore passed. These merchants served and gained great power and stately status in the imperial courts of Bhatti Rajputs who laid the state in the 12th century. However, the rich merchants, encouraged by the classic lifestyle of the royals, built huge mansions (havelis) adjoining each other like the ones of medieval culture.

The fort houses five palaces called Sarvottam Vilas, Akhai Vilas, Gaj Mahal, Rang Mahal and Moti Mahal – each of them interlinked behind the seven-storied fascia. The abundantly embellished walls and ceilings, finely carved outdoors and interiors and the used items of the then rulers suggest their lavish lifestyle. Small flights of stairs lead from one court to the other with delicate jali screens guarding interiors from the scorching heat and fierce desert wind. The Rang Mahal constructed by Mool Raj II showcases some of the most beautiful murals painted on the arches and spandrels. From the verandas you can have a wonderful view of the ramparts underneath guarding the small town.

The four huge gateways, the last one of which leads to main chowk dominated by the old palace of the Maharwal are wonderful architectural pieces. Approached through Ganesh Pol, Suraj Pol, Bhoot Pol and Hawa Pol, the fort is a mystery of sorts. Also, it houses several beautiful havelis and a cluster of Jain temples dating as early as the 12th to the 15th centuries.

Lodharva

A center of several yellow sandstone temples and structures, Lodharva is a wonderful site to be in, to soak in the spirit of the architectural uniqueness of the past artisan.
The Jain temples of Lodharva made of bright yellow sandstone are some of the most attractive sites to visit. Despite being in ruins, the brilliance of these Jain temples is clearly visible these pictures have captured every bit of its radiance for our good. The erstwhile capital of the Bhattis Rajputs, Lodharva was once a prosperous city but with time, lost most of its grandeur when the Bhattis shifted their capital to Jaisalmer in the 12th century. This city is actually much older than Jaisalmer and was more than once ransacked, most notably by Mahmud of Ghazni in the 11th century on his way to Somnath, and subsequently by Mohammad Ghori in the following century.

Among the several Jain temples at Lodharva, the Parswanath Temple, Rishabhnath Temple and the Sambhavnath Temple bear the greatest significance. The Parshvanath Temple is the main Jain temple which enshrines an idol of Parsvanath, the 23rd tirthankar, finely wrought in silver and enclosed by fine sculptures. The first thing that catches one’s eyes about the pictures of Lodharva temples is the magnificent artwork of the toran or archway at the entrance of the temples. These arches are famously characteristic of the Dilwara style of temple architecture. The beautiful Jaali works make these temples a piece of marvel. It is heavenly to watch the sun rays coming through the jalis and intricate carvings on the walls of the temples.

The Parshvanath Temple was ruined in 1152, but was recreated in the year 1615 by Seth Tharu Shah and further improvisations were commissioned in 1675 and 1687. The temples are sparklingly clean and well maintained to keep the brilliance of the yellow sandstone intact. One cannot deny the irresistible charm that envelops Lodurva ruins, redolent of its ancient glory. Matching well with the surroundings of the city of Jaisalmer, with lands of golden sands and shimmer, the temples are gilded structures amid the desert land.
